Job Description

The Data Governance Manager will be a key team member within Group Data reporting into the Data Management Director. The Data Governance Manager will be responsible to set the foundations for data governance principals and standards across the organisation working with technology, finance, commercial, marketing, product and data functions.

Embrace and promote the emerging need of data governance across the organisation, while identifying relevant data stewards and make them realise the importance of data stewardship and get their agreements to own their part of data ownership to improve data governance.

In collaboration with key stakeholders, you will research and evaluate potential data governance tools, negotiate terms with vendors, and ensure contracts align with business need. You will also coordinate the implementation of such tools within the wider organisation and collaborate across key functional areas for execution.


In this hands-on role, you will apply your stakeholder management, data management and data governance savvy to:

  • Working with colleagues across the organisation to understand the data governance gaps
  • Design the Group Data Governance Framework, including:
    • Business glossary, master and reference data management
    • Definition of data roles and responsibilities across the organisation
    • Negotiating and agreeing with data stakeholders their ownership, oversight and maintenance responsibilities
    • Data dictionary identifying where data is mastered, sourced and copied and by whom
    • Defining data services between data suppliers and consumers, including operating model, SLAs, quality and support obligations, quality reporting etc.
    • Producing a roadmap for the framework rollout and working with business and IT teams to ensure it is successful
    • Lead on campaign to educate and inform stakeholders of the value and the emerging need of Data Governance and progress against plan
    • Leading the implementation of the identified data governance product / tools into business
    • Assess data quality across key services and produce metrics and plans to implement improvements through greater use of industry leading data quality tools
    • Ensure compliance with data related policies, standards, roles and responsibilities, and adoption requirements (GDPR).
    • Establish the standards to be applied per data set and ensure the appropriate roles and processes are in place to maintain them going forward
    • Ensure that data sets and the supporting business processes are documented accordingly, and that the data dictionary is complete, accurate and up to date.
    • Collect and report on the agreed set of metrics and KPIs highlighting the levels of data quality
    • Identify opportunities to reduce the cost of data.
  • You will lead the data governance process, with support from legal, risk & compliance, data, technology, finance, commercial, marketing and business stakeholders providing direction and priorities


Ideally, the person in this role will have the following qualifications, skills, and experience:

  • Educated to degree level.
  • Experience in managing third-party data relationships
  • Project management experience.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Excellent stakeholder management experience.
  • Analytical mindset
  • Awareness and experience in working with data security, regulatory and privacy requirements.
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong understanding of data management concepts such as Data Governance, Data Lineage, Data Models, Data Quality, Control Frameworks, Data Architecture, Data Analysis
  • Prior experience of defining and implementing data governance within insurance and financial institutions are preferable
  • Previous experience implementing a data governance product, such as Collibra, Talend, SAP, etc.
  • Ability to identify and propose innovative solutions
  • Previous experience of working with Agile teams
  • Managerial ability to look at demand and capability and identify and propose opportunities to improve service and throughput
  • Excellent communication skills, collaborative style, able to influence at all levels in the organisation
