Data Governance Manager

Our client, a leading Lloyds of London Insurance Broker, is looking to put the usage of data at the heart of the strategy, service offering, and operations of the organisations it manages.

As part of an overall Data Strategy, our client has recently adopted a Data Governance Policy, established a Data Governance Framework and created a network of Data Owners and Data Stewards focussed on compliance with these. The Data Governance Manager will take over responsibility for both these new arrangements and for ensuring that Data Governance is successfully embedded into the company culture. They will also support other staff engaged in data-related work.

The role of Data Governance Manager includes;

  • Periodically revising / refreshing the Data Governance Strategy and Policy
  • Chairing the quarterly Data Governance Committee (Data Owners)
  • Monitoring and resolution of Data Issues and Incidents
  • [From 2021] Running quarterly Data Audits and the actions arising from these
  • Review of Change Programmes & Projects from a Data Governance perspective
  • Liaison with Group InfoSec & Data Privacy

The successful Data Governance candidate will be a hands-on "player-manager", with the ability and willingness to "roll-up their sleeves" to get nitty-gritty work done is also key, this would include administrative tasks to do with Data Governance (e.g. maintaining the Data Issues and Incidents Log).

There is a need for a technical / IT background (or at least good familiarity) from multiple perspectives:

  • Analysis of the root cause of Data Quality Issues, be that process or technology-based, and designing / implementing solutions in collaboration with other areas of the business
  • Understanding and reviewing Change projects and programmes to ensure that they adhere to the Data Governance Policy and improve Data Quality
  • Running specific Data Quality Improvement initiatives, be these educational, systems changes or specific remediation of bad data

Analytics & Insight, including Data Science and Machine Learning, are becoming key differentiators for the business. The Data Governance Manager will work closely with the Head of Data & Analytics to ensure such work adheres to the Data Governance Policy and to provide support by aligning Data Quality improvement work with Analytical needs.

Experience required to be a Data Governance Manager;

  • Insurance (3 Years+)
  • Data Governance
  • Data Management
  • Data Quality Improvement
  • Data Audit
  • Support and review of Change Programmes & Projects from a Data perspective#
  • Knowledge, or at least familiarity with, data-related technology
  • Sufficient knowledge of SQL / Database Programming to either write or specify Data Audit scripts
  • Understanding of the software development lifecycle and the role of Data Governance in this area
