10 Years of Rust NYC: The community behind the world's largest Rust user group

Share
Rust NYC is celebrating a major milestone this year: 10 years of bringing together engineers, founders, open-source contributors and technology leaders from across the Rust ecosystem.
What started as a small meetup has grown into the world's largest Rust user group, creating a space where people can learn, collaborate and help shape the future of the language.
Ahead of this month's Summer Social, we caught up with Ben Martin to reflect on the journey so far, some of the standout moments from the last decade, and why community continues to play such an important role in Rust's success.
Here's what he had to say.
Rust NYC is celebrating its 10-year anniversary this year. For those who may be new to the community, can you tell us a bit about Rust NYC and how it has evolved over the last decade?
Rust NYC is New York City's home for developers and engineers passionate about the Rust programming language. For the past ten years, the community has served as a gathering place where members come together to share knowledge, explore ideas, and push the boundaries of what's possible with Rust. What started as a small meetup has grown into a thriving community of nearly 5,000 members on Meetup, with a Discord server that continues to expand a testament to just how much momentum Rust has built over the last decade.
Looking back over the years, what are some of the standout Rust NYC events or moments that come to mind?
Over the years, Rust NYC has hosted some truly standout events. One of the most memorable was when Lawrence Harvey organized an UnConf, creating a unique space where over 30 speakers could host and present simultaneously giving the community an incredible breadth of perspectives all in a single afternoon. Another highlight was being welcomed by OpenAI at their NYC office, a generous gesture that brought the community together in a truly special setting. These moments reflect what makes Rust NYC special: the generosity of its members and the spirit of collaboration that runs through everything we do.
One thing people often talk about when it comes to Rust is the strength of the community. What role do you think Rust NYC has played in bringing people together and helping the ecosystem grow?
Community has always been one of Rust's greatest strengths and Rust NYC reflects that. By giving founders, open-source contributors, and industry leaders a platform to share their work, the community has played a real role in promoting and educating people about the language. It creates a space where ideas are exchanged freely, creativity is encouraged, and the next generation of Rust developers can find their footing. That kind of grassroots energy doesn't just support a programming language, it helps shape its future.
This year's Summer Social is a little different from a typical Rust NYC event. What can attendees expect on the night?
The Summer Social is all about the people. It's a free event no tickets, no barriers just an open invitation to come connect with some of the most exciting minds in the Rust ecosystem, from developers to founders and everyone in between. There won't be formal speakers this time around; instead, the floor is yours. Whether you're looking to swap ideas, make new connections, or simply catch up with familiar faces, this is your evening.
